【Destination: Where to go

Attractions of cities
In recent years people are increasingly taking one or more short-breask holidays during the year in addition to a longer summer holiday. This has had the effect of increasing the importance of cities as tourist destinations. Traveling to these destinations is easy since most have convinient airports, frequent flights and good rail and road links. People can take a city-break at any time of the year. Cities have a variety of things to offer visitors and attract a wide range of people.

Trends in popularity
Like all tourist destinations, cities experience ups and downs in their popularity as a result of various factors. Changes in popularity may develop slowly over many years but they can also take place very rapidly.

The economy
The state of the economy plays an important part in the choice of holiday destinations. When people earn more money, they tend to take more holidays, spend more and travel further. When times are bad, holidays are one of the first things that people cut out. People are also influenced by changes in the exchange rate of currencies.

Image and the mass media
Television, cinema, the Internet, newspapers and magazines all play an important part on creating or damaging, the image of an holiday destination. Tourist boards and tour operators do their best to promote destinations by creating a positive image through advertising. However negative reports i the mass media can easily deter people from taking their holidays in certain places. If people starts to think of a destination as a dangerous place they will obviously avoid it.

Natural disasters
Floods, earthquakes, hurricanes, avalanches and volcanic eruptions are unpredictable and highly dramatic. The damage will reduce the number of tourists visiting the area in the period immedately following the disaster. Fear of coming into contact with disease can also cause problems.
